5 Years of Supper Club...and at least 1 more!
Our supper club hit its five year mark last December. We successfully pulled off five consecutive years of supper club in New York City. During this time friends moved away, got married, had children, got divorced and changed careers. Needless to say the group evolved. It evolved to the point where I wasn't sure if the group should continue. Even I hadn't gone to any of the suppers in August through October so it wasn't surprising the suppers were scheduled late and had low attendance. To my defense, I had another child. She (Isla) is adorable, calm and amazing. She was also born a week before Hurricane Irene, but that's a whole other story.
In December, we usually schedule a restaurant night instead of a supper because life is too hectic around the holidays. Our go-to restaurant is the Peking Duck House on Mott Street in Chinatown. It is perfect because no one in the group is adventurous enough, at least not yet, to make Chinese food for a large group. One day before our restaurant night, I got a call from the Peking Duck House because they had to cancel our reservation because of a "situation." I took this as an omen. Seriously, I could only get six people out of two supper clubs to come and get amazing Chinese Food. DUCK! Who doesn't want duck? Vegetarians I suppose. AND now they were mysteriously going to be closed.
I was about to cancel supper club and the whole shebang, but then realized that I did not want to end Supper Club with a "situation." I also got a craving for Momofuku in the East Village and thought would be a great substitute to the Peking Duck House.
It only ended up being 5 of us at Momofuku, but that was enough...enough fun to remind me even if I sleep 3-4 hours a night on average, get about an hour on the the computer a day, and get one night out a week - I still want to spend one of those nights a month planning or going to suppers with friends.
